Baron Brown Studio has been teaching the Meisner technique from the same Santa Monica base since 1975, which makes it one of the longest-running Meisner houses on the West Coast. Founder Joanne Baron trained under William Esper, the longtime head teacher at Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Playhouse, and observed Meisner's own private classes; she runs the studio with her husband, writer and director D.W. Brown.
The core of the program is the classic two-year sequence: First Year and Second Year Meisner, each meeting twice a week, followed by a month-to-month Third Year advanced scene study class. Around that spine the studio offers a six-week intensive that is open to beginners, a weekly on-camera audition technique class, four-day master classes, weekly Alexander Technique and voice and speech support classes, and a three-month career-launch program for alumni that brings in agents and managers. First and Second Year Meisner and the master classes are also taught virtually.
Admission is by scheduled interview rather than audition, and enrollment opens throughout the year. The studio does not publish tuition; pricing is discussed at the interview. The studio's own alumni claims include Halle Berry, Robin Wright, and Mariska Hargitay.
