Founded1996

The Young Actor's Studio has taught young performers from its NoHo Arts District base since 1996. Founder and artistic director Jeff Alan-Lee, a former child actor who previously taught and directed at the Lee Strasberg Institute in both New York and LA, wrote the Applause Books title A Young Actor Prepares, and his teaching leans Stanislavski with an individualized, script-driven bent rather than a single rigid system.

The schedule is built around school-age lives: kids classes run Saturday or Sunday mornings from 10 AM to noon, covering technique, script work, improv, scene study, voice and movement, and on-camera basics; teen classes run Saturday or Sunday afternoons from 2:30 to 6 PM with scene study, character development, improv, and on-camera work. Summers add weekday programs for roughly ages 8 to 12, running 10 AM to 2 PM in one- or two-week sessions at the Lankershim Boulevard studio. Online teen classes and private coaching round it out, and adult classes exist despite the youth-forward brand.

Tuition is not published; families are asked to schedule a call before enrolling, and registration runs through standard class-registration platforms. The studio's own alumni claims include Scarlett Johansson, Shia LaBeouf, and Olivia Rodrigo, claims we have not independently verified.

Techniques taught

  • Stanislavski: The root system of modern actor training: objectives, actions, and given circumstances.
  • Eclectic / multi-technique: Schools that draw on several lineages and fit the tools to the actor, not the reverse.
