Cold Reading Classes in Los Angeles: 28 Schools

Cold reading is the skill of making sense of a script you have just been handed, and it is trained separately because it is a reading and comprehension skill as much as an acting one. Every listing is researched from official sources and dated; see our methodology.

What this training is

In a cold reading class you receive material with little or no preparation time and work it immediately. The craft being taught is how to scan a page for structure, find the relationship and the change fast, keep your eyes up enough to be present, and stay flexible when a reader gives you nothing. It is the direct preparation for auditions where sides arrive hours before the slot.

Who it suits

Actors who prepare well but fall apart without prep time, and actors who are strong in rehearsed work but consistently lose short-notice auditions. It pairs naturally with audition technique.

What these listings show

Counted from the verified records on this page when the site was last built, on 2026-08-15.

  • Published pricing. 19 of 28 publish enough pricing to place them in a band: $ (6), $$ (13). The other 9 do not publish rates, so you have to ask.
  • Audit or trial. 15 of these 28 offer an audit or a trial class, which is the cheapest way to judge a teacher before committing.
  • Audition required. 1 requires an audition or placement before you can enroll, so plan for a step before the first class.
  • Levels. 24 accept complete beginners and 24 run advanced work (86% and 86% of this list).
  • Private coaching. 26 also offer one-to-one coaching alongside classes.
  • Young actors. 12 of these serve kids or teens as well as adults.
  • Where they are. Concentrated in North Hollywood and Studio City (10), Santa Monica and the Westside (6), Hollywood and Mid-City (6), across 7 areas of Los Angeles in total.
  • Techniques taught. Most commonly Eclectic / multi-technique (19), On-camera technique (13), Meisner (9).
  • How established. 17 publish a founding year, the earliest 1960 and the most recent 2012.

How to compare them

Ask how genuinely cold the material is, since some classes distribute sides in advance and lose the entire point. Ask how often you read per session. This is a skill built by volume, so a class where you read once per evening is not going to move it.
