Audition Technique Classes in Los Angeles: 56 Schools

Audition technique classes train the specific event of getting the job: cold reads, self-tapes, callbacks, and what to do in the room, which is a separate skill from acting well in a scene. Every listing is researched from official sources and dated; see our methodology.

What this training is

The content is unglamorous and practical. You work short sides rather than full scenes, often material you receive the same day, and the class covers slating, framing a self-tape, reading with a reader, handling a redirect, and the etiquette of the room and the virtual room. Some LA classes bring in working casting directors as guests, which is legal and common, though under California law a class cannot be sold as a hiring opportunity.

Who it suits

Actors who audition and are not booking, and actors returning after time away, since self-tape convention has moved quickly. It suits people whose scene work is already solid but who lose the job between the sides arriving and the tape going out.

What these listings show

Counted from the verified records on this page when the site was last built, on 2026-08-15.

  • Published pricing. 37 of 56 publish enough pricing to place them in a band: $ (8), $$ (24), $$$ (2), $$$$ (3). The other 19 do not publish rates, so you have to ask.
  • Audit or trial. 25 of these 56 offer an audit or a trial class, which is the cheapest way to judge a teacher before committing.
  • Audition required. 6 require an audition or placement before you can enroll, so plan for a step before the first class.
  • Levels. 50 accept complete beginners and 50 run advanced work (89% and 89% of this list).
  • Private coaching. 47 also offer one-to-one coaching alongside classes.
  • Young actors. 28 of these serve kids or teens as well as adults.
  • Where they are. Concentrated in North Hollywood and Studio City (17), Hollywood and Mid-City (15), Santa Monica and the Westside (7), across 9 areas of Los Angeles in total.
  • Techniques taught. Most commonly Eclectic / multi-technique (38), On-camera technique (23), Improv and sketch (16).
  • How established. 37 publish a founding year, the earliest 1964 and the most recent 2019.

How to compare them

Ask whether you tape every session or only some. Ask what happens to the tape. If casting professionals visit, ask how often and who, and treat any suggestion that a class leads to representation or a booking as a reason to walk: a paid class that markets access rather than training is the oldest problem in this town.
