The Heller Approach descends from an explicitly anti-Method lineage. Don Richardson, an original Group Theatre member alongside Meisner, Adler, and Strasberg, rejected emotional-recall acting and wrote Acting Without Agony; Brad Heller trained under Richardson in LA and built this studio in 1997 to carry the approach forward. The pitch: believable characters without dredging personal trauma, and fast, repeatable emotional access built for on-camera work.
Classes run three times a week at the Secret Rose Theater in the NoHo Arts District, covering scene study and analysis, cold reading and audition technique, on-camera and commercial work, improv, and stage-fright management. Published pricing is $295 per month for one class a week or $495 for two, with Zoom sessions worldwide at published hourly rates. Students are accepted from age 13, making this one of the few serious technique rooms open to teens alongside adults.
A free introductory class lets you test the approach before paying, and the studio's client list, by its own account, includes Masi Oka, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Judge Reinhold. If the Method has never sat right with you, this is the counterargument with the deepest LA roots.
